How the reaction time test works
- Click the box to begin. It turns red: wait.
- After a random delay of 2 to 5 seconds it turns green. Click (or press Space) right away.
- Your time appears in milliseconds. After five tries you get your average and best score.
How do you compare?
| Average time | What it means |
| Under 200 ms | Very fast |
| 200–250 ms | Faster than average |
| 250–300 ms | Typical |
| Over 300 ms | Slower than average, often due to device lag, tiredness or distraction |
These ranges are rough guides for an online visual test. Results are not comparable between different devices, and this test is for fun and practice only.
What affects reaction time?
- Your hardware: screen refresh rate, mouse or touchscreen delay and browser all add a few milliseconds.
- Alertness: sleep, caffeine and focus make a big difference.
- Practice: gamers and athletes often score better on familiar tasks.
- Age: simple reaction time tends to be quickest in the late teens and twenties and slows gradually after.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good reaction time?
For a simple visual test like this one, most adults score between about 200 and 300 milliseconds, with an average around 250 ms. Under 200 ms is very quick. Your result also depends on your device, screen and mouse, which add some delay.
Why is my score slower on some devices?
Screens, mice, touchscreens and browsers all add small delays. A 60 Hz screen only updates every 16.7 ms, and wireless mice and touchscreens can add more. Use the same device when comparing results over time.
What happens if I click too early?
If you click before the screen turns green, that try is marked "Too soon" and does not count. The waiting time is random, between 2 and 5 seconds, so you cannot predict it.
How can I improve my reaction time?
Practice helps a little, but rest makes the biggest difference. Reaction times are slower when you are tired, distracted or have had alcohol. Good sleep, focus and a responsive mouse and screen give the best scores.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. Press the Space bar or Enter instead of clicking. On phones and tablets, tap the box.
