How to use the keyboard tester
- Click anywhere on the page so it receives your key presses.
- Press every key once. Keys turn dark while held and teal once they have worked.
- Look for keys that stay grey. Press them again firmly to check for a dead or sticky switch.
- Hold several keys together to test rollover and ghosting.
Common keyboard problems
- Key does nothing: dirt under the keycap, a worn switch, or a damaged connection. Try compressed air first.
- Key types twice ("chatter"): common on worn mechanical switches. The log will show two presses for one tap.
- Wrong character appears: usually the keyboard layout setting in your operating system, not the hardware. Compare the key value and the code.
- Keys missing during gaming: limited rollover. Test the exact combination you use and see whether every key lights up.
Keys browsers cannot detect
The Fn key on laptops is handled inside the keyboard itself and never reaches the browser. Media keys, brightness keys and some system shortcuts (like Alt+Tab or the Windows key) may also be captured by your operating system first. If these keys do their job in other apps, they are working.
Testing other hardware? Check your speed with the reaction time test or the typing speed test.
