How to calculate your GPA

  1. Convert each letter grade to grade points: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on down to F = 0.
  2. Multiply the grade points by the course's credit hours to get quality points.
  3. Add the quality points and divide by the total credit hours.
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Worked example

CourseGradeCreditsQuality points
Calculus IB+ (3.3)413.2
English CompositionA (4.0)312.0
PsychologyA- (3.7)311.1
Chemistry LabB (3.0)13.0

39.3 quality points ÷ 11 credits = a semester GPA of 3.57. If you already had a 3.25 GPA over 45 credits, your new cumulative GPA is (3.25 × 45 + 39.3) ÷ 56 ≈ 3.31.

Raising your GPA

Each new term counts less as your total credits grow, so early semesters have the biggest effect. Focus on classes with the most credit hours, ask about grade replacement for retaken courses, and use the final grade calculator to plan for finals. High school student? Use the high school GPA calculator for honors and AP weighting.

Frequently asked questions

How is college GPA calculated?

Each letter grade is worth grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add these quality points together, and divide by the total credit hours.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Enter your current cumulative GPA and the credits it is based on, then add this term's courses. The calculator combines them, weighting each by credit hours, to give your new cumulative GPA.

Do pass/fail classes count toward GPA?

Usually not. Pass/fail, audit and withdrawn courses generally do not affect GPA at most colleges, though a failing grade in a pass/fail course sometimes does. Leave them out unless your school says otherwise.

Is an A+ worth 4.3?

Some colleges give 4.3 for an A+, but many cap it at 4.0. This calculator uses 4.0. If your school uses 4.3, your GPA may be slightly higher.

What GPA do I need for graduate school or honors?

Requirements vary widely by program. Many graduate programs list a minimum around 3.0, and Latin honors cut-offs are set by each college. Check your target school or your registrar for exact numbers.
