How to calculate a tip

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100  ·  Total = bill + tip

On a $64 bill, a 20% tip is 64 × 0.20 = $12.80, for a total of $76.80. Split between 4 people, that is $19.20 each.

Tipping before or after tax

If you want to tip only on the food and drinks, enter the tax shown on your receipt in the "Tax included" box. The calculator takes it out before working out the tip, then adds it back to the total.

Quick mental math

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place left. $64.00 → $6.40.
  • 15%: 10% plus half of 10%. $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
  • 20%: double 10%. $6.40 × 2 = $12.80.
  • 25%: divide by 4. $64 ÷ 4 = $16.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States, 15% to 20% of the bill is customary for table service, with 20% or more for excellent service or large groups. Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for big parties, so check your bill before adding more.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, which is the cost of the food and drinks themselves. Tipping on the total with tax is also common and simply adds a little extra. Choose either option in the calculator.

How do I calculate 20% quickly in my head?

Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10%, then double it. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80.

How much do people tip for delivery, taxis and haircuts?

Customs vary, but many people tip about 15% to 20% for delivery drivers, taxis and rideshares, hairdressers and barbers. For counter service and coffee, tipping is optional and often smaller.

How do we split the bill fairly?

Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the bill and the tip evenly. Turn on rounding to make each share a whole dollar amount that is easy to pay.
